The Anthropology of Isolation

April 30, 2014

I moved to Tokyo. I am far away from pretty much everything that is familiar. It seems odd to me that a country the size of California could integrate so much western culture, (both fashion and Latin alphabet, loan words, etc) and still, at it’s heart be a monolingual society. Everyone studies English in public school. Everyone takes English tests all the time, and in theory, everyone has an advanced grasp of the English language, but such is not always the case. More later.
